Dave Keir Mahogany v. Rosewood

Yeah, well. Much has been written. For the uninitiated we're talkin' acoustic guitar tonewoods here. I have two guitars (well, two that are being regularly played) which are identical apart from some cosmetics and the woods comprising the backs and sides; to whit: one has mahogany back and sides, the other rosewood. Do they sound very different? Well... To my - and most keen guitar players' - ears, they sound very different. To a lay person, if a difference is detected at all it will be someth… Continue

Andy Cooper otherwise known as AKAJOHN Why are so many artists over looked?

Having been in this business for longer than I care to admit, I know just how hard it is to get noticed by the so called experts in the field of music. They have what they call a demagraphic. That being the demographic of what they percieve will make them money. At the most, they see the kids as the real music buyers, however in a time when all it can take in some pop genres, is 36,000m sales to get to number one, you have to really wonder if the demographic is out of whack a little? I have seen… Continue

Chip An Introduction

My name is Chip. I am, first and foremost, the father of Anne Marie who is part of this community. I am her manager at this stage as well. Years ago, in the 1980's, I did a lot of songwriting for church (over 40 compositions!) and my wife and I did over 600 wedding ceremonies, mainly due to her beautiful voice. We also did a few private, secular gigs in ice cream parlors and parties. I self-produced an album of my songs which I then sold to a religious publishing company who managed to sell abo… Continue

Nestled in the western part of KY, Ohio County, was where my forefathers settled - long time ago! My great, great great grandfather Talbot Wallace was one of the earliest settlers! Back then, you were either a Stevens, or a Bennett, or married into the family! Talbot Wallace married the governor's daughter Sarah Stevens! They donated a little of their land for the building of the No Creek School! In my archives, I have the picture of the old Methodist/Episcopal church that had 2 doors in front -… Continue

kickradio My Prediction: MySpace will lose artist members if they don't change

This is ridiculous... The world's biggest social site is about to collapse -- in my opionion -- at least around their music members... The proliferation of spammers on Myspace has caused the site to take extraordinary measures -- but those measures may now be their own suicide. Look, it is like this, right? You are Joe Music and you have a page on Myspace, right? Now along comes Jane Listener-Fan who likes what she hears and maybe she would like to learn more and buy a CD, right? So she now… Continue

Dave Keir Mixing it

Getting to grips with some new titles is always interesting for its own sake - but it also refreshes the ears if they've been only fed a diet of familiar sounds and songs thereby slowly losing critical acumen. At another level, there's the odd effect caused by continuously recording and mixing solo acoustic guitar and vocal. That kind of presents my ears with a pretty constant sonic palette and while that's great for becoming sensitive and attuned to subtle nuances, it does become make me feel s… Continue

Dave Keir The Zone

A recent thread on an internet forum got me thinking. The original poster criticized guitar players who concentrated too much on technique and not enough about putting their heart into it. Good point. Perhaps it’s a lack of confidence in playing accurately that causes some players to become a bit mechanical in their execution of their music. Perhaps some simply don’t have an “artist’s soul” (I don’t buy it either). I get nervous sometimes on stage and that sure inhibits getting in the groove! On… Continue
